RMNEF Newsletter July 2025
News and Noteworthy
Earlier this month, we proudly marked His Majesty King Charles III’s Official Birthday, an occasion celebrated across the country with Trooping the Colour.
As Patron of the Royal Merchant Navy Education Foundation, His Majesty continues a royal tradition of support for the UK’s maritime community. The King’s commitment to public service and his deep respect for the seafaring profession reflect the values at the heart of our Foundation. Education, opportunity, and dedication to those who serve at sea.
We extend our continued gratitude to His Majesty for his patronage and send our warm regards following the celebration of his official birthday.

EDI Workshops Underway to Promote Inclusion in Maritime Welfare
In a positive step for the maritime welfare sector, a nationwide series of Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) workshops are now well underway. Launched in May 2025, these workshops are being delivered by the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, in partnership with other maritime charities including The Seafarers’ Charity.
Taking place in cities such as London, Southampton, and Glasgow, the sessions are designed to help welfare organisations better support and engage with the diverse communities connected to the maritime world. As a charity committed to supporting young people from a wide range of seafaring backgrounds, the RMNEF welcomes this important work and its contribution to building a more inclusive future for all within the maritime sector. Now is the Time: Avoid the Post-Holiday School Uniform Rush

Each September, primary and secondary school children across the UK return to school in new uniforms. But behind that back-to-school photo is a truth many don’t see: for families of seafarers, these uniforms often come at a cost they can’t easily afford. That’s where the Royal Merchant Navy Education Foundation can step in.
RMNEF provides direct financial support for school uniforms and other school equipment, ensuring that children in seafaring families start school with dignity, confidence, and a sense of belonging. From blazers to shoes, book bags to PE kits and even bicycles to travel to school on, we help cover what families need most.
Because when a child feels comfortable, they feel ready to learn.
• On average in UK the cost of secondary school uniform is £287
• Families often spend over £400 per child, including extras
Uniform Saving Tips:
• Buy slightly larger sizes for longer wear
• Label everything (even socks!) to avoid loss
• Swap or reuse with older siblings or school uniform banks
• Check your local council or PTA, some offer second-hand options
Best Time to Buy
• July: Best stock, early sales
• August (1st–15th): Still good stock, check online
• Late August: Crowded, limited sizes, rushed delivery
Check with your school for their specific uniform list, not all items are sold in supermarkets.
