MNWB Launches Updated Ship Welfare Visitor Training
The Merchant Navy Welfare Board (MNWB) has launched a fully refreshed version of its Ship Welfare Visitor course, designed for maritime charity staff and volunteers supporting seafarers in ports. The updated training provides essential guidance on safe and effective ship visiting, with a stronger focus on key frameworks including the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC 2006), Fisher Work Convention (C188) and port security requirements.
Delivered in partnership with international organisations, the course helps ensure consistent standards across the sector and is widely recognised by port authorities. Used by charities such as Stella Maris and The Mission to Seafarers, the training continues to play an important role in supporting frontline welfare work and strengthening care for seafarers across the UK and beyond. https://www.mnwb.org/news/umbrella-charity-unveils-revamped-ship-welfare-visitor-course-to-strengthen-support-for-seafarers/

Growing Focus on Student Mental Health
Student mental health continues to be a key focus across the UK higher education sector. University Mental Health Day on March 10, brought national attention to the importance of wellbeing, with universities and organisations working together to promote support and reduce stigma.
Recent data and reporting also highlight the scale of the challenge, with increasing numbers of students experiencing anxiety, isolation and financial pressure during their studies. Surveys suggest that a significant proportion of students report mental health difficulties, while demand for university support services continues to rise. https://www.studentminds.org.uk/
These developments reinforce the importance of accessible financial and pastoral support, particularly for students studying away from home. For those from maritime families, organisations such as RMNEF play a vital role in helping to reduce pressure and support students to remain engaged in their education.

Spotlight on Success: Supporting Becky’s Musical Journey

At the RMNEF, we are proud to support individuals whose ambition and talent reflect the resilience of our seafaring community. One such individual is Becky, whose story highlights both the challenges faced by fishing families today and the transformative impact of targeted support.
Becky, aged 27, is the daughter of a lifelong commercial fisherman. Her father has worked at sea since 1980 and continues to do so, despite significant physical challenges. Like many in the fishing industry, the family faces financial uncertainty, with limited income and no pension provision, making long-term security a growing concern.
Despite these circumstances, Becky has shown exceptional determination. Having already completed her undergraduate studies, she has secured a place at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she is undertaking a Master’s degree in Performance. This course represents a crucial step toward a professional career in music, an opportunity that could open doors to a wide range of creative and professional pathways. However, like many postgraduate students, Becky has exhausted her access to student finance. Without additional support, she would have been unable to continue her studies.
Recognising both her talent and potential, the RMNEF stepped in to provide funding toward her course fees and associated costs. To manage the high cost of living in London, Becky is commuting daily from home, demonstrating her commitment and willingness to make personal sacrifices to achieve her goals.
During our meeting with Becky and her father, what stood out most was their humility and work ethic. This was a family not accustomed to asking for help, but one that embodies the values of perseverance and dedication that RMNEF exists to support.
Becky’s story is a powerful reminder of why our work matters. By supporting her at this critical stage, we are not only enabling her to complete her education but also investing in her future. Helping her turn talent into opportunity.
We look forward to following Becky’s journey and celebrating her future successes.
