Merchant Navy Seafarers Pledge
As a charity dedicated to supporting Merchant Navy families, especially through children’s education, we are thrilled to see Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines make history as the first cruise line to sign the Merchant Navy Welfare Board’s (MNWB) Seafarer Pledge. This initiative unites organisations in respecting the seafarers who keep the UK connected.
Leaders across the maritime sector have praised the move, with MNWB Deputy CEO Sharon Coveney noting that over 80 organisations have now joined the pioneering pledge to improve industry standards. Maritime consultant Steven Jones added that ‘Fred. Olsen is setting a high benchmark for the industry, proving that looking after the people who underpin global trade is both essential and inspiring for the next generation of maritime talent’. Sea Fit Programme
The award-winning SeaFit Programme continues to be a lifeline for commercial fishers and their families. Jointly run by the Seafarers Hospital Society and The Fishermen’s Mission, SeaFit tackles the unique health challenges of maritime life by bringing crucial support directly to the quayside. Because fishers often find it difficult to access routine care while working irregular hours at sea, the program provides accessible, on-the-ground help, including NHS health checks, mental health counselling, healthy lifestyle advice, and emergency dental care via mobile units.
For the fishing families we support, initiatives like SeaFit make a profound difference in keeping people healthy, safe, and independent. By bridging the gap between isolated coastal workers and essential health services, the program ensures that those who sustain the UK’s seafood industry receive the care and respect they deserve both on and off the water.

SPOTLIGHT
Supporting Edward’s Path to Medicine
For many young people, September marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter: starting university or college. Reaching this milestone is a journey in itself, shaped by months of studying and revision, the anticipation of exam results, navigating clearing and working out how to manage the financial realities of student life. It is also a time to look ahead, to new experiences, greater independence and the hopes and aspirations that will guide the years to come. This month, we shine a spotlight on a student we began supporting with monthly living-expense payments last year.
At the RMNEF, we are committed to supporting the next generation as they pursue ambitious and life-changing careers. Edward is a strong example of this, demonstrating resilience, dedication, and a clear sense of purpose.

Edward worked hard and secured a place at one of the top UK Medical Schools, where he has begun a six-year degree in Medicine. His ambition to become a doctor reflects both his academic ability and his desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
Edward comes from a strong maritime background. His father, a former Master Mariner, is no longer able to work due to ongoing health issues, while his mother works in a healthcare role with a variable income. Together, these circumstances present financial challenges for the family, particularly as Edward begins a long and demanding course.
While student finance will cover tuition and accommodation, the additional costs associated with studying away from home can be considerable. Edward demonstrated initiative by saving £3,000 towards his studies, and RMNEF supports in the form of a monthly living expense grant helps ensure he can remain focused on his course.
Having previously received support during his earlier education, Edward’s journey highlights the lasting impact of continued assistance. With the Foundation’s backing, he is now well placed to pursue a career in medicine and make a meaningful contribution in the future.
